Trauma Therapy

Healing the Past. Empowering the Present. Building the Future.

At Recovery Cove, we understand that unresolved trauma is often at the heart of substance use and mental health challenges. Whether you’ve experienced childhood adversity, emotional neglect, loss, abuse, or a traumatic event, the effects of trauma can ripple through every part of your life. Recognizing this allows you to give yourself grace and compassion while seeking the support you need.

As a recovery center for mental health and substance use disorders, Recovery Cove is committed to delivering comprehensive care tailored to the individual. If trauma is part of your story, you don’t have to let it define you any longer. You can work through unresolved trauma, heal from your past, and work toward a healthier and more resilient future. The team at Recovery Cove will be here with you every step of the way.

Defining Trauma: What Is It?

Trauma is more than just a bad experience. It’s an emotional and physiological response to events that overwhelm your ability to cope. Trauma can stem from:

  • Childhood abuse or neglect
  • Domestic violence or relationship trauma
  • Sexual assault
  • Serious accidents or injury
  • Military service or combat
  • Sudden loss of a loved one
  • Emotional manipulation or abandonment

You don’t have to meet a textbook definition to be “traumatized.” If it hurt you and continues to affect how you think, feel, and respond—it matters.

Does Trauma Affect Everyone in the Same Way?

One of the hard parts about trauma is that it doesn’t affect everyone in the same manner. Trauma is deeply personal, and the way someone responds depends on many factors, such as their background, biology, support system, and past experiences. This is why it’s so important to be compassionate to individuals who have gone through adverse experiences. Just because one person is able to heal and move forward does not mean another person will.

At Recovery Cove, we believe there is no “right” way to respond from trauma. All responses are valid. If you went through an event that left you feeling shocked, numb, anxious, angry, or disconnected, and you’re not feeling better after a few weeks, it may be time to seek support. Without treatment, this could turn into post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

What matters to us is how the trauma is affecting your life today. If you feel that you are struggling, you deserve support.

Signs You May Be Living with Unresolved Trauma

Not everyone is aware that what they’re going through is due to unresolved trauma. Here are some signs to be on the lookout for:

  • Persistent anxiety, irritability, or emotional numbness
  • Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories
  • Difficulty trusting others or maintaining relationships
  • Substance use as a way to cope or self-medicate
  • Feeling stuck, disconnected, or “not yourself”
  • Trouble concentrating, sleeping, or relaxing

Trauma isn’t always loud or obvious, but its impact is deep. Our trauma-informed therapists are trained to gently uncover, process, and help you release what’s weighing you down.

Our Approach to Trauma Therapy in Lehigh Valley

At Recovery Cove, we create a safe and supportive space where healing can begin. Trauma therapy is available to individuals in all levels of our outpatient programs. We tailor treatment to your needs using the most effective, research-backed methods:

Evidence-based therapies we use include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps reframe negative thoughts and break unhealthy patterns rooted in past experiences. It teaches practical skills to manage triggers and reduce symptoms like guilt, anxiety, and shame. Over time, the goal of CBT is to empower individuals to regain a sense of control and safety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT helps individuals heal from trauma by teaching skills to manage overwhelming emotions, reduce self-destructive behaviors, and improve relationships. Through a combination of distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness, DBT empowers people to stay grounded in the present moment and deal with stress in healthier ways.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT supports trauma recovery by helping individuals accept painful thoughts and feelings without being controlled by them. Rather than avoiding or fighting trauma-related emotions, ACT encourages mindfulness and self-compassion, allowing people to stay present and grounded.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

TF-CBT is a structured, evidence-based approach designed specifically for individuals who have experienced trauma. It helps them process traumatic memories in a safe and supportive way while teaching coping skills to manage difficult emotions. TF-CBT combines traditional CBT techniques with trauma-sensitive strategies to reduce fear, shame, and distress while building resilience.

The team at Recovery Cove will always work at your pace—never pushing, always supporting.

Trauma and Substance Use: The Hidden Link

Research shows that up to 75% of individuals in substance use treatment have a history of trauma. That’s why addressing trauma isn’t optional—it’s essential.

Left untreated, trauma can increase the risk of relapse, undermine self-esteem and motivation, and make it harder to manage triggers and cravings. It can also cause co-occurring disorders like depression, anxiety, or PTSD. By addressing trauma, you can heal from the inside out instead of just living sober.

Trauma-Informed, Compassion-Driven

From your first day at Recovery Cove, you’ll be met with respect, empathy, and understanding. Our entire staff is trained in trauma-informed care, meaning we prioritize emotional safety, avoid retraumatization, and focus on building trust and collaborations.

While all of our treatment plans are tailored to the individual, we also empower our clients to make their own choices about their treatment. We want you to feel that you are in control of your healing journey and not just being instructed on what to do. We promise to always honor your story while believing in your strength. Anyone willing to put in the work can get better.
